There still room and you can still “get your plaid on.” Now in its 42nd year, the Verizon Heritage is Hilton Head Island’s main event. While our beaches, golf courses, shops, restaurants, natural beauty and friendly atmosphere draw a few million people to our island every year, it’s the Heritage that gets everybody cheering.
There is, of course, great golf happening at Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines Resort. But the Heritage is more than golf. Tournament Director Steve Wilmot said it best. “I travel to different tournaments, in Chicago or Phoenix, or any other big city, and they’re all great events. But unless you are somehow involved with those tournaments, when you get to those cities, you’d never know the tournament was going on. But on this island, the Heritage is Hilton Head and Hilton Head is the Heritage.”
For the Tour players, it’s a relief from the pressure of The Masters. And during the Heritage you’re likely to see the pros and their families pile into and out of local eateries, walking the beach and, in many cases, dropping by homes of island residents who have become friends over the years.
Members of the PGA Tour consider the Verizon Heritage a family tournament and for this upcoming week, they are absolutely right. The guys out there challenging Harbour Town Golf Links, along with their families playing at the Harbour Town playground or visiting the petting zoo at the newly refurbished Lawton Stables, become part of the family of Hilton Head Island.
